Currently, there are all sorts of odd jobs, but in the past, people had jobs that are now considered strange and that no longer exists. On the first place among these jobs, the thieves of bodies is one of them. This profession existed in the nineteenth century when it was very difficult to find a corpse for scientific purposes.
Thieves were stealing dead bodies from the cemetery and gave them to universities where they were providing them for scientific study.
Another forgotten profession is that of a milkman – before fridges were invented, there was a person who, every morning, was bringing milk and left it in front of the houses. Milk was delivered in bottles and the customers left out the empty ones in front of their houses to be picked up by him.
Another job missing is the hunter of rats – someone who hunted and killed rats, to prevent diseases. These ‘hunters’ risked their health, searching through garbage dumps to reduce the rat population.
The clock man – before the advent of alarm clocks, there were people who went from house to house and woke people up from sleep in the morning. For this service, a prior request was needed, to know exactly the time that the person wanted everyone to be awakened. This profession was extremely widespread in England and Ireland during the industrial revolution.
Lamplighter – before the advent of electric light, someone had to deal with street lighting. Thus, it appeared the lamplighter profession. Those who practiced this craft were using long rods, with gas lamps to lit up the streets.
