Peace in Colombia After Half Decade War

The civil war which started in Colombia back in 1964 has finally come to an end, after a peace treaty that took place in Cuba between the Colombian government and the rebel forces.

The peace negotiations to end the conflict which ended more than 260,000 lives were held for over four long years until pace was finally installed.

On October 2, a referendum regarding the peace will be organized for the citizens by the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos.

The citizens of Bogota already went out in the streets in order to celebrate the peace which will be brought up by the referendum in October.

Last night President Juan Manuel Santos came out in front of the public to officially announce that the talks for peace they were negotiating since four years ago have finally came to an end.

The Cuban diplomat Rodolfo Benitez stated: ‘The Colombian government and the FARC announce that we have reached a final, full and definitive accord… on ending the conflict and building a stable and enduring peace.’

Santos declared that the long war is over, as well as the pain, suffering and tragedy around it.

A new campaign was launched by the president, advising everyone to vote ‘Yes’ for the referendum, for this will be one of the most important votes of their lives.

Some of the Colombians are skeptical regarding the peace, reacting with caution, while others already went out in the streets to celebrate, waving the Colombian flag and holding balloons on which the word ‘Yes’ was written.

This is a historical moment for Colombia and its citizens and hopefully it will be a moment to last.
