As part of his commitments to sponsor youth sports, Kobe Bryant is known to spend big on education programs in China.
Earlier this year, Vipkid founder Cindy Wenjuan Mi – a Chinese investor in online education start-up who got inspired by Bryant’s well-documented efforts – reached out to him on a collaborative project aimed at providing Chinese children a virtual American elementary school experience.
In June, Bryant flew across the pacific to meet with the company, Vipkid in response to the call. According to Bryant, his decision to invest was incited by just 5 minutes of listening. In his quest to help kids learn and grow, Kobe Bryant is looking to pattern with companies adding value to society.
This is not the first time the former Lakers guard is making an investment. Over the last four years, he has completed several deals with business partner Jeff Stibel. Millions of dollars have been invested in fifteen tech and media companies from their Los Angeles venture capital fund, Bryant Stibel.
For the first time, the pair revealed their investment strategy when they announced that about $100 million of their own money was pooled for start-up deals. Though he declined to state how much cash remains, Stibel said the venture has written checks worth millions of dollars.
According to Bryant, his desire to learn about people and companies got him into the tech world. It was then he discovered that he could be of great help to businesses by providing advice and cash. For about 20 minutes, Bryant chatted with Chief Executive Cindy Wenjuan Mi at the stock exchange Monday.
Ever since the basketball legend decided in investing in the tech world, young players have been turning to him to either seek advice on how to start their own ventures or learn how to get involved.
