According to a report by Horsepower Kings, the latest model of Ford Mustang GT500 will make over the 700 horsepower mark, all thanks to improvements by the auto maker. The exact power is unknown for now, but it is safe to say that Ford is trying to outdo the 707 HP.

The details concerning the coming vehicle are still scanty, though multiple reports suggest that the 2018 GT500 will use a new, twin-turbocharged V8 engine (5.0L), with output punching the 740 horsepower mark. That is certainly a lot more when compared to the current Dodge Challenger Hellcat and the coming Chevrolet Camaro ZL, but remember that horsepower fiends (which is the next Hellcat) is expected to tap into 750 HP.

Despite these new modifications, like the current Ford Mustang GT350, the 2018 GT500 won’t be just a straight-line model. You can count on it to have many of the improvements of the GT350R and GT350 such as plenty of aluminum bits beneath its skin and carbon fiber wheels (optional).

The current flat-plane crank of 5.2-liter V8 in the Ford GT350 runs at a high compression ratio, so Ford will slap turbochargers into its 5.0-liter V8 engine, which will also enjoy the benefits of having a direct injection system.

Countering this rumor are several reports claiming that the Ford GT500 will come with a supercharged version of 5.2-liter featuring a cross-plane crankshaft instead of the flat plane.

In addition, the car’s weight savings will feature the use of aluminum, carbon reinforced plastics and carbon fiber.

The new Ford Mustang GT500 is expected to arrive as the 2018 model year, meaning that it should debut in the later part of 2016 or early in 2017. In January, the Detroit Auto Show would be ideal to unveil this high-power car.
