After spending the majority of his campaign boasting about the lack of spending he was doing, Donald Trump has curiously become a lot more loose with the purse strings now that the donations have begun to roll in.
The Huffington Post reviewed the Federal Election Commission filings associated with the building and found that Trump decided to quintuple the rent his presidential campaign was responsible for paying each month after he began to raise funds from various donors.
Rent was raised to nearly $170,000 in the month of July, a far cry from the amount that was paid in March, when Trump was self funding the campaign. The rent was raised, even after the amount of paid staff members for the Trump campaign decreased significantly.
Trump Tower Commercial LLC only collected $35,458 for the month of March and even though the amount of paid staff decreased from 197 to 172, Trump has shown zero qualms about using donor money in an excessively generous manner.
The fact that staff has been cut yet the rent has been raised substantially would seem to provide the Hillary Clinton campaign with a wealth of material for a potential attack ad. In addition to the rent hike, Trump has also funneled campaign funds into his own restaurants and golf courses.
For Trump’s part, his representatives are claiming that he personally contributes $2 million of his own money each month, which is more than able to cover the cost of the rent. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is spending roughly $212,000 per month, even though her campaign staff is much larger (numbering over 700 for nearly a year) than Trump’s, calling his usage of campaign funds into serious question.
