It seems that Self-Driving taxis are the new thing now.
In Singapore, the latest innovation is this taxi, which doesn’t even costs a thing to ride, being free of charge.
Because it is a project which has not been tested yet, the cars are only on a trial, having someone in the driver’s seat, for the safety of the passengers and to monitor the way the taxi behaves.
One would assume there is a big company behind the project, when in fact, it is a company based in the United States with offices in both the US and Singapore, called nuTonomy, which was founded in 2013 by two researchers, specialized in driverless technology and robotics.
It was earlier this year when the company got permission from the city council to test the cars in a small area of the town.
When you think of self-driving cars, you imagine a futuristic vehicle with all kinds of features, when in fact, the taxis are Mitsubishi and Renault’s cars equipped with additional improvements such as cameras and the company’s software.
The first try of nuTonomy of such a vehicle was back in 2014 when they implemented the technology on an electric mini-golf-cart.
There is a number of six self-driving cars on which the company installed cameras that are working with the software and a system of lasers to monitor the surroundings which work like a sort of radar.
Right now, for people to be able to ride the taxi, they have to register first, after an invitation on behalf of the company is received. Only a few dozen people beneficiated of such a ride so far but the company wants to expand to a few thousand in the upcoming months.
