In the recent years, many people interested in a healthy lifestyle avoid carbohydrates, but what that do not know is that some types do not cause weight gain.
Foods such as beans, lentils, whole grains, white rice, and potatoes are rich in resistant starch, which cannot be digested in the gut, so it has no influence on blood sugar and which, according to studies, it has numerous benefits on health. Raw bananas, certain seeds, and brown rice flour also contain resistant starch.
Health, and especially of the colon, has benefited from the consumption of foods high in resistant starch. Thus, the pH is adjusted and inflammation in the colon is reduced, preventing in this way the risk of colorectal cancer which is the fourth worst mortality factor.
Also, the therapeutic effects of it may improve symptoms of conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, chronic constipation, diarrhea or diverticulitis.
Foods rich in resistant starch are indicated in diets because they give the feeling of satiety and have many calories plus they keep sugar cravings away. Starch is not necessarily the one who helps in the process of slimming but especially the fibers contained in these foods.
However, popular diets such as Atkins and Dukan limit or even exclude carbohydrate intake in the early stages and have significantly contributed to their bad reputation.
Dietician Rebecca McManamon from the British Dietetic Association maintains that carbohydrate intake is an important part of a healthy diet and limiting or excluding them from the diet should be undertaken with caution.
