Marilyn died three months after the Madison Square Garden event, in 1961.

The actress, who died aged 36, is said to have requested a ‘historic’ dress from designer Jean Louis.

The dress Monroe wore that night, at the president’s birthday, when she sang “Happy Birthday Mr. President” will be auctioned, according to BBC.

According to the American news agency, the garment was so tight, her stylists had to sew the stitches, while she was trying the dress. Apparently, the first time it was put for auction was in 1999, when it was sold for $1,26 million.

The representatives from the Julien’s auction house believe that at the auction from this November, the dress could be sold for $ 3 million.

The silk dress is encrusted with rhinestones, pearls, and sequins. The auction will take place in Los Angeles on November 17. Until then, the delicate garment will be exhibited at the Mana Museum in New Jersey.

One of the 20th century’s most iconic sex symbol, Monroe starred in ‘Some Like it Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’. She suffered a career decline amid numerous health, addiction and personal problems, including widespread rumors of an affair with Mr. Kennedy.

The auction house’s executive director Martin Nolan, revealed they have had a world-wide interest in the dress, which he described as ‘the most important item we’ve ever sold’.

Besides the iconic dress, Julien’s will auction more items that belonged to the late star, including jewelry, shoes, a watch and lipstick.
