Britain will support the construction of a wall near the refugee camp in Calais, said Robert Goodwill, British Minister of State for Immigration.

Named “The Great Wall of Calais” by the international press, the fence is going to be built on both sides of the main highway from Calais and will have a height of four meters and a length of one kilometer.

According to Robert Goodwill, security has been intensified as immigrants have continued to try to board vehicles heading for Britain.

A group of lorry drivers called the wall a “bad use” of public money. The leader of this group argues the money will be spent on the construction of the wall “could be better used to strengthen security along the access roads.”

It is assumed that the wall will start to be built in September and will be completed in late 2016. The wall will not replace existing fences.

The government refused to confirm the cost of construction of the wall, but reports suggest it will rise to 1.9 million pounds, a sum that will be extracted from the package of £ 17 million allocated to support measures to strengthen the Franco-British security in the Calais port.

Many of the immigrants living in the refugee camp in Calais are trying to reach the UK embarking on trucks as they approach the tunnel under the English Channel.

Many fences were built to prevent the entry on the Channel Tunnel and railways in Calais.

On Monday, leaders of lorries and French farmers blocked the main highway in a protest demanding the closure of the camp of migrants from the Calais city area.
