U.S. President Barack Obama canceled his first official meeting with president Rodrigo Duterte Tagalog, after the Filipino state leader offended the most powerful man in the world, stated a White House spokesman.
A populist known for his acid remarks and controversial campaign against drug trafficking, that caused the death of thousands of people, used derogatory words to describe Obama, during a press conference on Monday. The disturbing speech took place a day prior to the bilateral meeting organized in Laos where a group of Southeast Asian leaders reunite for an annual summit.
Rodrigo Duterte said he accepts to confront Barack Obama if the American leader will question his methods to fight against drug trafficking, according to Le Figaro.
Obama found about this at the G20 summit in China. He told his advisers with the Filipino officials in order to let Duterte know the meeting will not take place.
“I want to make sure that if I have a meeting, it will a productive one and we are obtaining something”, said Obama to the reporters.
Instead of meeting with Duterte, Obama is planning to discuss about the bilateral relations with the South Korean president Park Geun-hye.
A few hours after announcing his decision, the Filipino president expressed his regrets regarding his controversial statements from Monday.
‘He truly regrets his press statements caused such a controversy.’, said one of his spokesmen. In a country where more than 80% from the residents are Catholics, Rodrigo Duterte offended Pope Francis for causing a traffic jam. He addressed the same insult to the American ambassador Philip Goldberg Manila and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
