Saudi Arabia announces on Tuesday the execution of a prince, who is also a member of the ruling Al-Saud family.
The prince was accused of killing a Saudi citizen making the kingdom look really bad, informs France Presse.
In an official statement, the Saudi Interior Ministry wrote that Prince Turki Bin Saud Al-Kabir was executed because he lethally shot the Saudi citizen after a collective fight.
Turki Bin Saud Al-Kabir was executed in the capital of Riyadh, suggested the official press release. When it comes to punishing a princess or prince, applying a death sentence is not a very common thing but according to the Saudi Government, the ‘divine law’ does not make any distinction.
‘The application of a divine law makes no distinction between a prince and an ordinary citizen. We are all equal in this country’, said Twitter user Mubarak Al Dhafer.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions on Twitter.
‘It has been only three years between the murder and the execution’ said lawyer Abderrahman al-Lahem, congratulating the ‘determination’ of the authorities who applied the law. He pointed out that the judicial process regarding these cases ‘take much longer.
This is the 134th execution in the kingdom since the beginning of the year, according to official releases.
The human rights organization Amnesty International is outraged by the increased number of executions from the last months. They urged Riyadh ‘to impose a moratorium on these executions and abolish the death penalty once and for all’.
In 2015, 153 people were executed in Saudi Arabia, which is the highest number in the last 20 years, writes AFP.
Most times the death penalty is applied in cases of terrorism, murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking.
Saudi Arabia is the third country in the world when it comes to the number of executions after Iran and Pakistan, according to a report initiated by Amnesty International.
