The Malay Prime Minister began on Tuesday an official visit to China, where he signed an ‘important defense agreement’ with Beijing, a new potential affront to Washington after the rapprochement between China and the Philippines, AFP and Reuters informed on Tuesday.

Najib Razak’s visit comes two weeks after the visit of President Rodrigo Duterte Tagalog to China, which caused a dramatic warming of relations with Beijing after many years of tensions.

Malaysia and China will complete the first important defense agreement between the two countries, announced the Malay Prime Minister, the Xinhua news agency wrote.

He said last week that his country and China are determined to reach new heights and engage in new areas of cooperation.

In October, Duterte announced the separation from its American ally, a statement which emphasizes the attraction exerted by the growing economic and the diplomatic power of China, to the detriment of Washington.

Najib Razak, who arrived in China on Monday was invited on Tuesday evening to a state dinner, followed by a meeting with the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The arrival in power in 2009 of the Malay Prime Minister coincided with a warming of relations with Washington. But later he was gradually oriented toward China, the largest trading partner of Malaysia.

If they complete the purchase of Patrol Vessels, it will be the first significant contract in defense that Malaysia will conclude with China, taking place amid growing tensions in the South China Sea and the conditions under which the US and China compete for the influence in the region.
