The New York authorities advised people who noticed these strange symbols call the police immediately.

In order to pass unnoticed, they are marking one of the 36 symbols on the door. While some of these signs represent meanings such as ‘there is nothing valuable in the house’ or ‘single woman’, others may symbolize ‘generous owners’ or ‘can not be left alive’.
