Russia has a bold new plan this year. As a local newspaper reports, the country plans to get rid of all of the debts it inherited from the Soviet Union. And will do so right this year.

Last week, a measure was already taken and a debt was cleared. The Eastern Europe country payed back the 60.6 million dollars back to Macedonia.

Now, it has to pay its debt to two more countries. Herzegovina and Bosnia will have to receive a sum of 125 million dollars. The two states broke from Yugoslavia and have earned their right to get the debt back.

The state has planned this long before. The process was a very difficult one, that required a lot of time. They need to sign the final agreement, but this will take a few more months. The Russian bank will pay the debt at once. Russia is confident that by the end of the summer, the debt will be gone.

Now, they have to sign the agreement and the money will be given in less than 45 days.

These debts are from the 80’s and they came from various causes. Russia had this debt to the two countries after a trade. The former USSR gave the two energy and industry supplies, while they gave goods. Because the difference of imports and exports was big, the debt occurred in time.

Another payment to other European countries was made in 2006. US also received some money.

The reason why they chose to pay the debt is to protect the international relations, which are already fragile.
