Panama has decided to suspend its diplomatic ties with Taiwan and instead the Beijing government decided to establish a similar agreement with China, AFP reports.

Currently, Taiwan, labeled by China as this ‘rebellious province’, remains recognized globally by 20 countries.

‘In the light of the interests and the desire of the two nations, the Republic of Panama and the Popular Republic of China have decided, from the date of signing this communiqué, to grant mutual recognition and to establish diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level’, reads the communiqué released by Panama.

“Panama is breaking its diplomatic relations today with Taiwan and is committed to ending any relationship or official contact with Taiwan”, suggests the same communiqué, through which the Panamanian government wanted to highlight that “there is only one China”.

Meanwhile, Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela announced its nation that ‘Panama and the Popular Republic of China are establishing their diplomatic relations today’.

Until now, Panama has diplomatic relations with Taiwan and commercial ties with China.

China is the second most important user of the Panama channel after the United States.

Last year, China delivered through this channel about 38 million tons of cargo or 18.9% of traffic.

The announcement comes a week after Beijing began building a container port with natural gas facilities in a province from northern Panama.

In Central America, all states recognized Taiwan in 2010 when Costa Rica broke its diplomatic relations with the island.

Following this announcement, Taiwan expressed its regret regarding the “unilateral” separation.
