Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan might receive an arrest warrant from Sweden after the European lawmakers filed a complaint against the Turkish leader, accusing him of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Five Swedish lawmakers from a public prosecutor’s office initiated a lawsuit against Tayyip for the role played by President Erdogan in the bloody conflict between the Turkish troops and the Kurdish militants from south-eastern Turkey.
This is the first criminal complaint filed against a president in Sweden.
Other ministers, including Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, are also mentioned in the file.
If this process is taken over by the Swedish prosecutors, this could lead to issuing an arrest warrant with Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s name on it.
“We are five MPs who filed the complaint … demanding a punishment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes”, stated Swedish deputy Annika Lillemets.
In 2014, the Swedish parliament approved a law by which the national courts to analyze and judge cases of crimes against humanity, without taking into account the country where these crimes took place.
“Anyone who wants to completely or partially destroy a national or ethnic group … is guilty of genocide”, added the official.
The Swedish prosecutors will decide whether or not to launch an investigation based on the criminal complaint.
