116.000 euros was the fine that a Romanian shipping company paid up after a driver violated a series of traffic rules in the Italian town of Rovigo.
It was too good to be true, stated the Italian officials from Rovigo, considering the mishap involved a fine of 116 euros.
The error was committed by one of the Romanian company’s employee, who instead of typing the right amount he or she added three zeros extra, writes Diaspora’s Diary.
This Italian “drama” began after the East European trucker was captured by the video surveillance twice, near Riva, Veneto, speeding above the legal limit.
Meanwhile, in Romania, after the company made the payment, the owner woke up with his emptied accounts and believed he is losing his mind.
After he arrived at the office, desperate he urged his staff to make some calls in order to find out what happened.
Eventually, everything was clarified and the Italian local administration was forced to initiate the most confusing bureaucratic burglary in order to transfer the unjustified money back.
“We had to check everything. It’s not so easy to reimburse 116,000 euros. A balance sheet variation will be made. I mean, first, we need to set up an intended entry and a consecutive exit for the money transfer. I had a meeting with the council, and this was also among the debated points. Now the person in charge of this will order the refund. Bureaucracy is high in such cases, and we have to adhere to certain rules,”, said Fabio Casellato, the economist at the Ariano Polesine City Department.
