Tunisia wants to reform their legislative system by offering more rights to women
President Beji Caid Essebi has named the initiative “an example for the Arab countries after the new legislative proposals would give women the right to marry men of another religion, but also to receive equal inheritances rights as men, writes The Guardian.
Currently, Muslim women are not allowed to marry men of another religion in comparison to their male compatriots who not only have this right but they are also allowed to marry foreigners who refuse to convert to Islam.
Invoking Nigeria’s 2014 constitution, President Essebi argued that “the state is bound to ensure equality between women and men and to ensure equal opportunities for both sexes.”
If these laws are being adopted, Tunisia will become one of the most progressive Muslim countries, who chose to protect women from violence and rapists who most times end up marrying their victims in order to not become punished.
Liberal Deputy Rym Mahjoub said the initiative is “progressive and revolutionary”: “As a woman, I am proud that these issues have been debated. That does not mean that there are no other economic or social issues, or that we are eliminating those issues from the discussion. ”
“We apply the fundamental principles of the Constitution. Why can a Tunisian man marry a woman who is not Muslim, but a woman cannot? There are no taboos anymore. With this law, we will become an example for the Arab world and Muslim women”, said Dalenda Larguèche, an activist for women’s rights from Manouba University.
Legislative proposals have also been greeted with a wave of criticism from President Essebi’s opponents, who argue that it should focus on other “more important” issues, such as the high unemployment rate.
