A group of journalists from BBC have discovered a series of clues which prove that some Islamic State (ISIS) members tried to recruit new terrorists in 2016 as an attempt to launch a terrorist attack in London.
A group of undercover reporters pretended to be British teenagers contacting ISIS agents who suggested the terrorist attack on Westminster Palace or London Bridge.
An anti-terrorist expert claims that the messages received by reporters are extremely relevant and the British journalists have sent the information to UK’s top security advisers.
“It’s the first time when a direct online approach has been clearly linked to London”, explained Raffaello Pantucci who works at London’s think tank RUSI.
The British reporters are in touch with ISIS for more than two years now.
They managed to stay in touch precisely because they presented themselves as persons devoted to the jihad.
In July 2016, the group of reporters discovered that the terrorist group was trying to link their social networks with the Muslim community from the UK with the main purpose of carrying out attacks in certain areas of London.
Reporters began chatting with one of the recruiters who invited them to a private video conference conducted on an encrypted messaging site.
Pretending to be a 17-year-old teenager living with his parents, a reporter was asked by a jihadist if he knew about Westminster. Then, he explained that the area is a good target, precisely because it is always crowded.
