The candidate supported by the UK to EU security commissioner, Julian King, was endorsed Thursday by the European Parliament by secret ballot, with 394 votes in favor out of 638 votes cast in the EP plenum.

Julian King has been validated by the EP plenary to EU security commissioner with 394 votes in favor, 161 “against” and 83 abstentions in the 638 votes cast.

Julian King has been nominated for London after his predecessor, Jonathan Hill, has resigned as commissioner, following the referendum regarding the separation of Britain from the EU.

King told the MEPs that he would respect the decision of the British population, but also will be loyal to the European Union.

“We strongly supported the UK government’s position during the campaign on the referendum in the UK,” said King.

“I was always proud to be British and proud to be European, and I see no contradiction between the two. But on June 23, most of my compatriots have decided that they want to leave the EU. We must respect that decision.”

The British candidate declined to comment on the announced departure of his country in the EU but wanted to clarify that London will remain just two hours by train from other European capitals.

Julian King has committed to working tirelessly to contribute to a safer, more inclusive and more determined EU, yet fully respecting fundamental rights.

King stressed that this will be not a ‘part-time or a second rank,” job for him.

“I have dedicated my life to European affairs,” said King, noting that he has 25 years of political experience, but stating he doesn’t want to do politics in his new position.
