Armenian Prime-Minister Hovik Abrahamyan announced his resignation

The Armenian Prime Minister was occupying the position for more than two years, reports Le Figaro.


According to the French newspaper, Hovik Abrahamyan announced the unexpected decision during a Council of Ministers meeting.


Abrahamyan motivated his resignation by saying that the significant slowdown of the economy, the acts of violence and the large-scale protests from the last month led him to this decision.


Armenia is known for their strong relations with Russia, depending on their economic and political support for years.


He took advantage of the press conference to state that the Armenian people must change their current government in order to make a change in their country.


Hovik Abrahamyan said the polarization of their society is obstructing potential solutions for major issues against corruption. According to the former state leader, his resignation will allow the Armenian president to add new and more capable ministers.


Earlier in July, the Armenian news agency EFE wrote about an incident involving hostages at a police station in the Armenian capital. The event generated a real political crisis and lasted for more than two weeks. The protesters received full support from the opposition groups founding themselves in a major row with the authorities. They have arrested a couple of days after.


Thes  20 authors were armed and demanding the release of Jirair Sefilian, an opposition politician arrested in June and charged with illegal possession of weapons. Before his incarceration, Jirair Sefilian demanded the resignation of pro-Russian President Serzh Sargsyan.
