The EU states have approved on Monday the European Commission’s proposal on the 2017 budget project to reduce funds allocated to the less developed European countries and increase the budget for security and migration management, writes Reuters on their website.

The European Commission proposal to increase funds for the immigrant crisis management was fully supported by the governments of the Member States. Thus, the migration and security budget for 2017 will increase by almost 25% compared to the year before, said the Governments of the EU Council in a note.

The migration budget next year will rise to 5.2 billion euros, the funds will be used to strengthen external borders, redistribution of asylum seekers and integration of migrants, while 2.2 billion would be used for actions outside the bloc aimed to address the causes of immigration.

To compensate for higher expenses on migration and to stimulate the economic growth, the EU agreed to reduce the spending on other programs and reduce funds for less developed regions of the Bloc, the vast majority are in the east.

Eastern EU countries, the main beneficiaries of development funds, fear that this decision could pave the way for even greater reductions in the coming years, several diplomats said.

The news came after the European Union said it will double the emergency aid for Greece for this country to improve living conditions for refugees and migrants stuck here for months.

Emergency aid worth about 115 million euros will be provided by the EU, in addition to the 83 million released earlier this year, the European Commission said on Saturday.
