Donald Trump, the Republican candidate in the American presidential elections, expressed on Wednesday his appreciation towards the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, saying that he was a better leader than Barack Obama, according to DPA.
Trump, who was speaking during a televised forum held in New York, said he has a great respect towards Russia and that he would have a “wonderful relationship” with Putin.
“I think I’ll be able to understand him,” said Trump. “He was a leader. Much more than was our president,” he added.
He pointed out that the advantage of good relations between the United States and Russia is that Moscow wants as much to destroy the Islamic State organization, just as Washington does.
“It would be great if we could work together on this issue,” said Trump.
The republican candidate added that Putin has “a very strong control” over his country, stating that it is a very different political system, which he does not agree with.
The democrat Hillary Clinton also attended the event, which was an opportunity for both candidates to speak about the role they will assume as presidents if they win the elections in November.
Clinton received a question about using a personal e-mail server while she holds the position of Secretary of State and the way she handled classified information. She defended her actions, saying she did exactly what she had to do.
Clinton added that she will be elected the president of the United States she would not send ground troops to Iraq or Syria.
