An asteroid was named after the late British singer Freddie Mercury in order to mark the day he would have turned 70 years old, BBC informs.

The 17473 asteroid was named after the ‘Queen’ star, although it was discovered in 1991 – the same year that the singer passed away.

According to his fellow-artist Brian May, who stated in front of 1,250 fans gathered at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland, the heavenly object will now be known as ‘Freddie Mercury’ to mark “remarkable influence of Freddie in the world “.

The ceremony includes the unveiling of an official certificate, which gives the exact coordinates and specific details regarding the asteroid’s nature. The document was confirmed by the International Astronomical Union and acknowledged by the Imperial College of London.

Besides the asteroid ceremony, the upcoming weekend is packed with commemorative events in order to remember the late singer, who died on November 24, 1991.

The British legend died at 45. Although he never was the most ‘religious’ person, Freddie’s funeral was conducted by a Zoroastrian priest. Sir Elton John and members of ‘Queen’ attended the ceremony. Freddie was cremated at the Kensal Green Cemetery and his ashes were scattered in Lake Geneva, near Montreaux, where the singer spent his last years of life. In his will, Freddie left half of his fortune to his parents and sister. Mary Austin inherited his house, in which she lives now with her family.

Despite his eccentric personality, Mercury was shy and withdrawn, especially around people he just met. During his career, he gave just a few interviews.
