Mukesh Ambani is India’s wealthiest man with an estimated fortune of $22.2 billion, according to Forbes.

Recently Ambani came up with the idea to invest $20 billion in a company that produces smartphones, in order to achieve higher Internet speed in the Indian homes.

The company, Reliance Jio, promises to provide high-speed Internet and affordable download services and efficient methods when it comes to video streaming.

‘Anything and everything that can go digital is going digital — at an exponential rate,’ Ambani told investors last week at his company’s annual general meeting. ‘Life is going digital.’

The first Reliance Jio network device was installed in New Delhi and reported some impressive results.

The 4G network was launched in the Indian market on Monday. The best news for the Indians is they will have free access to the Internet service until the end of 2016.

In the next year, a subscription with Reliance consists in paying up only 49 rupees per month.

In India, only one-fifth of the adults has access to the Internet. In the entire state, there are just a few areas that benefit from free Wi-Fi and broadband connections require an infrastructure that is rarely found in poor urban areas.

These aspects lead Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani to invest in this project. In the upcoming years, he plans to bring millions of Indians in the online space.  His goal is to connect 90% of the population to Internet until March 2017.
