The authorities of Catalonia announced the official date of the long-awaited referendum regarding the independence from Spain.
The election is set to take place on 1st October, but the Madrid government is trying so hard to prevent this ‘event’ from taking place because, as they claim, it will shake Europe’s fragile unity.
Despite the not so cooperating attitude expressed by the kingdom, the regional government of Catalonia announced the date of the referendum on Friday.
The Catalan President Carles Puigdemont claim voters have the unique duty to answer one question: ‘Do you want Catalonia to be an independent country in the form of a republic?’
The Puigdemont-led administration insists the wealthy region from northeastern Spain must benefit from a political, economic and cultural self-administration, writes The Guardian.
The Spanish government strongly opposes to the idea by claiming it is a violation of the constitution and has said it will use all the legal means to stop the referendum.
The First Lady of the new state is Romanian journalist Marcela Topor, wife of Carles Puigdemont.
Puigdemont was invested as the President of the Catalan government in 2015 and until then he had been the mayor of Girona.
The two married after the Orthodox rite in Romanian city of Iasi.
The couple welcomed two daughters baptized in the Holy Orthodox Parish of St. Prohoroc Ilie Tesviteanul and St. Gregory Palama of Girona.
