Ryan Lochte thought about committing suicide after being suspended for 10 months
The American athlete revealed the shocking details on Tuesday during an ESPN LIVE broadcast.
Lochte started to think about this possibility shortly after the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he was suspended because he and his friends lied about being robbed in Rio, informs L’Equipe.
“After Rio, perhaps I was the most hated person in the world. It was the time when I cried and said <<If I fall asleep and I will not wake up, it would be better>> I was on the verge of ending my life. You can be the greatest in history, but something bad can happen in any second”, added the former champion.
“In 2013 I thought about ending my career because I felt used. Being a father gave me a new motivation. A new flame has lit up and is bigger than ever”, revealed Lochte.
Ryan Lochte, James Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger told the authorities they were robbed on August 14, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro.
In the official report, the famous swimmer and his mates lied about how a group of armed men dressed in policemen attacked them and stole their belongings.
Lochte said the robbery occurred as they returned with a taxi in the Olympic Village from a party.
However, the investigation revealed the four athletes vandalized a gas station and they were forced to pay for the damages.
This scandal has caused a wave of indignation in US, and several companies ended their sponsorship contracts with the multiple Olympic champion.
