One of the best things about the Chromebook is how long-lasting it really is. If you recall, it came onto the market five years ago. In that time, it has been utilized by millions of happy customers. One thing that it came with was Google’s “End of Life Policy.” This offers buyers 5-years of security updates and new features. After the 5-years, there is no longer any guarantee the products will receive updates or security patches.
Google spokespeople stated that guaranteed service post-buy began on the product’s original date of release and not on the date that people made their purchase. Auto security and updates happen every six weeks. After five years, though, no one knows what the support will be. As of this date, two Chromebooks—the CR-48 and Samsung’s Series 5 both have an official date when support is gone. Also, Acer’s AC700 is slated for the end of service this month.
Google also stated that the 5-year plan is not necessarily a firm date. Although they did state that Google’s suggestion is to get a new device, rather than work with a 5-year old product. Although a firm end-of-date isn’t available, it seems that the company is pushing for ending its support on the products. It won’t make any further guarantees.
Google’s Chromebooks are more secure by design. They were constructed with built-in data encryption capabilities, verified boot mechanisms and auto-sandboxing to partition potential threats. In fact, they are considered to be safer than more common android devices.
Microsoft offers security updates for 10 years post-buy for consumers. Despite Microsoft’s security policy, Google is not planning on extending their policies. The end-of-life policy wasn’t released until 2013, well after most people made their purchases. At this point, though, no one really knows what kind of support they may- or may not- get.
