Police is giving up on cannabis

It is said that the number of cannabis consumers caught by the police between 2011 and 2015 is somewhere around 471 000 from which only 27% were charged and 40% only got a warning while the others walked free. There were even cases where people walked free even if they grew their own little garden for personal use.

Right now, only one out of four, caught possessing cannabis is charged. Even if they need to pay cautions, there will be nothing written on their enhanced checks, which means there is no actual consequence.

From the Centre for Policy Studies, Kathy Gyngell stated: ‘These figures show the police have given up on cannabis. It represents a total failure to protect the interests of young people. The correct sanction at the right age might just save them from a dangerous drug.’

The police report reveals that although the charges dropped dramatically, the consumption of drugs bloomed, whereas from 944 people charged with growing marijuana only 127 went to court from 2011 to 2014, the number falling to 87%.

The arrests for possessing the herb dropped by half from 35,367, in 2010, to a number of 19,115 in 2016.

Marijuana is a mixture of green, brown or gray leaves, stems, seeds and dried flowers of the Indian hemp, Cannabis sativa or indicia, and looks like a very finely cut green tobacco. Each type of marijuana contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive substance that these plants product. As the amount of THC is higher, the stronger the effect of this drug is.

The active substances in cannabis have a long history and a long tradition of medicine. In Eastern countries and Latin America, these substances are strong indications of widespread and especially medical and social consumption.

From the same plant, the hashish is also made, being the resin secreted by glands located on the leaves of the hemp. Hashish is sold in solid or pressed  ‘lumps’ or plates and presented, depending on the country of origin, in shades of red, brown, green or black. Hashish and hash oil are stronger forms of marijuana.
