The commando attack from Wednesday night killed 12 people.
According to Reuters, seven students, three police officers and two security agents died during the elaborate assault plan at the American University of Afghanistan.
Other 35 students and 9 civilians were severely wounded.
Although no organization has taken responsibility yet for the ongoing attack, the main suspects are the Taliban militants.
During the horrific scenes that lasted for more than ten hours, the Afghan security forces killed two militants.
“Seven students were killed and other 30 professors and students were wounded”, stated the Afghan Ministry of Internal Affair spokesmen Sedi Sediqqi.
The American University of Kabul was founded in 2006 by the United States Agency for International Development.
The institution became an appealing target for the Taliban organizations after the kidnapping of two professors. One of them was American and the other was Australian.
The authorities were not able to track the two professors but official Sedi Sediqqi said that “a criminal group” was responsible for the abduction.
During the elaborate attack from Wednesday night, the students were attending the evening classes. Evening classes are very common practice in Afghanistan because most students work during the day.
“I heard explosions and shots. Our classroom is full of smoke and dust”, revealed a student.
“We are stuck inside and we are very scared”, added him.
Following several emergency calls, an army of soldiers surrounded the campus.
After the horrific attack, most students took social media by storm posting heart-breaking messages.
