Barrack Obama, Creating World’s Largest Protected Area

The U.S President will travel next week to his native Hawaii to create the largest protected area on the planet, according to the White House.


During his presidency, Obama made the environment issue one of his top priorities. Now, the president plans to expand the national marine monument off the coast of Hawaii by quadrupling the size of Papahanaumokuakea to 582.578 square miles.


The reservation measures 139,800 square miles and was created in 2006 by President George W. Bush.


Papahanaumokuakea measures twice the surface of France and spans the same square kilometers as the state of Mongolia.


The President’s itinerary also includes the Midway atoll, where he plans to mark the event.


The Honolulu native President will give a speech in which he plans to highlight that massive climatic modifications could jeopardize the entire marine ecosystem.


The roughly 1,200-mile-long archipelago, which is known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands shelters more than 7,000 species including coral reefs, rare whales, and sea turtles.


The most special aspect when it comes to this fascinating archipelago are the black corals,  the longest-living marine species in the world.


The Papahanaumokuakea National Monument is a federal reservation, where fishing is forbidden.


The World Conservation Congress will take place on Wednesday and reunites officials from the Pacific Island Convention of Leaders and the International Union for Conservation of Nature World Conservation Congress.
