According to scientists, the sunglasses need to be changed after two years. The reason behind this is that after this time, the lenses are not doing their job as good as they used to due to prolonged sun exposure and usage.

The sun rays damage the lenses after a while, letting more UV light to go through them, which can harm one’s eyes. This can cause serious and permanent damage to the eye.

The UV light is not the same everywhere, being more harmful in the tropical areas where it is present in big amounts during summer and also the winter, meaning that the sunglasses need replacement sooner in some areas and later in other, depending where they are worn.

Because of the exposure, lenses can also break easily in areas where the UV light amounts are bigger.

More dangerous is not buying the right kind of glasses because the quality can also make a difference. A disease called oedema-distorted vision can occur if a person is not wearing the glasses with a proper protection.

Liliane Ventura, a professor at the Sao Paulo University, stated: ‘Ocular health is a serious concern worldwide, but particularly in tropical countries where UV indexes are extremely high in summer. In most countries in the southern hemisphere… sunglasses standards are not quite appropriate for the ultraviolet conditions.’

Depending on how much light they let in, sunglasses have many categories. Cutting to the point, the darker the shade, the less the visible light transmission passes through and the lighter the lens, more of it goes by.
