Steven Hill carved out an illustrious career for himself as a character actor in the worlds of film, television and theater. He received great acclaim for his role as District Attorney Adam Schiff on the long running crime procedural Law and Order and it is our regretful duty to report that he passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94.
He died this morning at the Mount Sinai Hospital and while the cause of death was not immediately available, his wife says that he was suffering from a variety of different ailments. Hill is also known to older audiences who remember him fondly from his role on the original Mission: Impossible television series in 1960.
Law and Order producer Dick Wolf called Hill one of the greatest actors of his generation and lauded him for his selflessness. According to Wolf, Hill was the only actor he ever knew that would voluntarily offer to cut his own lines for the greater good of the project.
A consummate professional, Hill also studied the ins and outs of the law, so that his character on Law and Order would be more believable to the audience. Even after he left the show, he remained visible to national television audiences, thanks to his role as the pitchman for TD Waterhouse Investor Services.
He also abandoned acting for a period during the late 1960s in order to further his studies of Orthodox Judaism.
In 1951, Hill married Selma Stern and the couple had four children together before they parted ways in 1964. According to the New York Times, Hill would marry his second wife, Rachel, three years later and they would go on to have five children together.
