Terrorists from an as yet unknown group attacked the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul, Afghanistan, on the evening of August 25, 2016. Thirteen people were killed and 21 people were injured by rifle fire and the detonation of an explosives-laden car in front of the University. All three assailants were killed. The rifle bearing assailants were killed by Afghan police hours after the initial attack.
The dead include a doorman, three police, two security guards, and seven students. The majority of the injuries came from rifle fire and from the explosion that blew out the windows in the front façade of the school. The attack was timed so that the majority of the 750 students that attend the university were in class. The presumptive group that is responsible for the attack is ISIS but no confirmation by ISIS or any intelligence service has been reported.
A political science major named Ahmad who was involved in the heinous crime aptly named the attack as an attack on education. The tenets of extreme Islamic thought do not allow the education of women that is a practice at the American University of Afghanistan. Many of the courses at the university are in conflict with the fundamentalist Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam.
The American University of Afghanistan was created in 2004 as a cooperative effort between a U. S. based nonprofit and the Afghan government. The university offers MBA programs, undergraduate programs, and specialized professional development programs. The majority of the students are from Afghanistan.
The school and its faculty have been the targets of terrorist activities and killing since the school was first opened. The U. S., Afghan Government, and university officials have issued strong condemnations of the attack and are at present seeking the source of the attack and potential collaborators.
