The well-known social media website, Facebook, has come out with a new strategy, based on your activity on it, determining whether you are Moderate, Liberal, Conservative or somewhere in the middle.
In order for someone to find out which category it is categorized in, they need to go on facebook.com/ads/preferences, after logging in, of course. They will be brought to a page that features the ad preferences, where a ‘Lifestyle and Culture” tab is, just beneath the ‘Interests’ header.
It is there where you will find a box named ‘US Politics’, where, between parenthesis, the ‘Liberal’, ‘Moderate’ or ‘Conservative’ words will appear. That is how Facebook categorized you.
It all depends on the interests you have and who or what you liked. So if you liked Donald Trump for example, they might deduct you are a Conservative. Even if you didn’t directly liked one certain thing, based on what you have in common with your friends might make the social network categorize you as well as them.
The ads are distributed in such a way, depending on people’s preferences, so they can influence certain groups more than others. An example is Donald Trump who paid for the ads to be shown more to ‘Moderate’ politically oriented people, than for the other ones.
Each day, the social media network comes with new ways to impress us. Whether it is in a good way or in a bad way is up to each and every one of us and choosing to be on Facebook is one’s choice.
