The Tunisian Minister of Defense Farhat Horchani estimated that 1,000 of its national joined the Islamic State group in Libya. During a press conference in Paris, the minister said that the figures circulating in the press between are exaggerated and in reality, the number of recruits is 1000. For now, they are not planning to return to Tunisia, but the authorities must be on guard because many of them have double citizenship, both Tunisian and French.
Horchani criticized the lack of a regional strategy when it came to the ISIS foreign fighters from Libya.
‘States are dealing with the problem day by day’, declared the Tunisian state leader.
‘The war against terrorism is a complex war. If we respond to terrorism taking militarily and security actions, we will lose. Terrorism is a mentality, a culture formed in the spirit of youth. We need to create a new type of education and have another type of religious discourse. We must convince young people that Islam is not like that, otherwise, in a few years we will have a monster more dangerous than Daesh ‘, the minister said.
Libya’s neighbors are concerned that ISIS militants who left their homelands to join the terrorist group in Libya might return now that the extremist group has no future in Sirte.
French minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian said the spread of ISIS fighters outside of Libya has to be stopped and a new strategy, in order to prevent such catastrophy, has to be implemented as soon as possible.
