At least six people died and more than 150 are critically injured after two trains collided in Pakistan on Thursday morning, reported Reuters.
The train packed with passengers headed to Karachi before it collided with a stationed freight train.
The impact made the four coaches to overturn, generating massive panic and horror among the passengers. The impact took place at about 25 kilometers from the city of Multan, in the Punjab region.
The authorities believe the responsible for the collide is the driver of the passenger train, who ignored the flashing lights meant to warn him the railway is occupied by a stationed freight train.
According to Reuters, the freight train stopped so the driver could remove the body of a man who had been crushed to death while crossing the railway track.
Ten people are in critical condition and were rushed to the nearest hospital. The railway system from Pakistan is extremely damaged and degraded, due to the lack of funds and attrition.
‘At least four-six people died and many others were injured’, said local official Nadir Chatta.
The rescue teams managed to save three victims trapped inside the carriages and rushed to the Nishtar Hospital. The authorities initiated an investigation in order to establish the cause and the exact responsible. Also, the public is being asked to donate blood as medics scramble to deal with the tragedy.
Another serious accident involving three trains occurred in July 2005. Three trains collided near a train station in Sindh when 130 people died.
Train accidents are very common in Pakistan, a country which inherited degraded railway system from the British colonists.
