The German government announced on Wednesday the official deployment of 650 troops to the NATO military base on the Mediterranean coast, near Libya.

Their No.1 mission is to combat the illegal traffic of weapons conducted in the area by ISIS.

Germany’s involvement in NATO’s ‘Sea Guardian’ will end in December 2017.

In case something unpredictable comes up, the German government plans to increase the number of soldiers.

Their deployment is just a small part of an elaborate strategy meant to expand Germany’s military role in Europe and NATO.

Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen struggled to improve their equipment and increase the military personnel after a period of decline.

The North Atlantic Alliance agreed at the summit that took place in July in Poland, to initiate a new maritime mission.

The new project has the main purpose to deploy the German ships on the Libyan coast, where the Islamic State imposed their laws.

According to Der Spiegel, Ursula von der Leyen and the Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said  that ‘terrorist organizations can operate freely ‘, due to their lack of an authority institution along the coasts of Mediterranean, especially in countries like Libya.

Currently, the German state is participating in another mission to combat human and weapon traffic on the Libyan coast. The mission was entitled ‘Sophia’ and it was initiated under EU’s special terms and conditions.

In the near future, the political coalition from Berlin plans to come up with a new strategy in front of the Parliament.
