The American actor, Mel Gibson, confirmed he is working on a sequel to the film “Passion of the Christ.”

With a surprise appearance at SoCal Harvest event, held in Anaheim, California on Sunday evening, Gibson confessed to the host, Greg Laurie, that he is working on the sequel which is just at the beginning.

“Of course, it is something huge,” said the actor. “It will be called Passion of the Christ 2, but will have the title Resurrection”.

Screenwriter of the film “Braveheart” Wallace Randall declared for the Hollywood Reporter that in June he wrote a sequel to the 2004 film, which focuses on Christ’s resurrection.

Directed by Gibson the film “Passion of the Christ” had Jim Caviezel-starring and grossed 612 million dollars in the global box office.

Wallace, who recently worked with Gibson on the drama “Hacksaw Ridge”, told the Hollywood Reporter that the resurrection is one of its specialties.

“I always wanted to tell that story. The passion of Christ is only the beginning. There is much to say about this story,” said the screenwriter.

Wallace said the request received from the Christian community had convinced him and Gibson to make another film.

“Risen” story, which also deals with the resurrection, was launched by Sony in February, though Gibson was not involved in the project. The film’s budget was $ 20 million, and earnings were worth only 46 million dollars.

The 60 years old and known as a traditionalist Catholic, Gibson is the author of the film “Passion of Christ” which had an unexpected box office success, despite criticism that it have brought. Gibson holds an Oscar for Best Director, won in 1995 for “Braveheart.”

Mel Gibson’s film, which depicts the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ’s life, has produced the biggest controversy in the Hollywood history when it was released in  the theaters. The film starring actress Maia Morgenstern caused a shock among viewers because of extreme violence. In addition, many have considered it anti-Semitic.
