Ms. Priyanka Yoshikawa’s is half-Indian and her unique features brought her the Miss Japan title. Last year, the former Miss Japan became the victim of the most disturbing backlash, after a group of critics stated that the title of Miss Universe Japan must be represented by a ‘pure’ Japanese rather than a mixed-race contestant.
‘Before Ariana, haafu girls couldn’t represent Japan’ added Priyanka . ‘That’s what I thought too… Ariana encouraged me a lot by showing me and showing all mixed girls the way.’
The 22-year-old beauty queen was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and an Indian father. One of her main purposes in life is to fight against racism. After winning the ‘Miss Japan’ title, Priyanka certainly has the right amount of publicity to make a significant change.
The exotic beauty told The Straits times she moved back to Japan when she was 10, after leaving for more than three years in Sacramento. Following her return in her native country, the model struggled with racial prejudice while her new classmates considered her a ‘germ’.
‘When I came back to Japan, everyone thought I was a germ. Like if they touched me they would be touching something bad. But I’m thankful because that made me really strong’, confessed the beautiful 1,76 m tall beauty. Priyanka is a successful young lady that has an elephant trainer’s license, practices kick-boxing and loves children. She will compete in the Miss World pageant in December. Last year’s Miss Japan, Ariana Miyamoto was the first mixed-race person to win the pageant.
