Iran and Britain resumed diplomatic ties at the ambassadorial level, after 2011 when a group of students attacked the British embassy in Tehran, informs the France-Presse agency.
Baeidinejad Hamid, aged 53, was delegated as Tehran’s representative in London. He played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the 2015 nuclear treaty and lifting the international sanctions on Iran.
Nicholas Hopton became the first British ambassador of Tehran, five years after diplomatic relations between the two countries were discontinued after several Iranian students attacked two buildings of the British embassy in Iran.
“Improving diplomatic relations offers us the opportunity to develop discussions on several issues, including the consular cases to which they are deeply concerned. I expect this to mark future more productive cooperation between our countries, allowing us to discuss the direct issues such as human rights or the role of Iran in the region and implementation of nuclear agreement and expansion of trade relations between the two countries, “said the British Foreign Minister, Boris Johnson.
Under the 2011 attack on the British embassy in Tehran, several students broke into the building by breaking the British flag, photos of Queen Elizabeth II and vandalizing offices. Following this incident, the British ambassador has withdrawn and trade ties of the two countries have been reduced, although violence was later condemned even by the Iranian leaders and politicians.
The British Embassy in Tehran was reopened in August 2015, one month after signing the nuclear agreement between the two countries.
Iran maintains historical suspicion of Britain, which dates back to the early 20th century, at which London was mixed in Iranian domestic politics to ensure access to cheaper oil to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
