Marine Le Pen, who eyes the presidency in France, made a visit in Lebanon. On Monday, she arrived in Beirut, where she met the Prime Minister. This was her first meeting with a foreign leader.
On Tuesday, she was supposed to meet the Grand Mufti. As she refused to wear a veil over her head, the meeting was canceled. She was surprised when she was asked to wear one, as she has met the Grand Mufti before and then she didn’t have to wear one. The two met in 2015, in Egypt.
Her trip only took two days and had a clear purpose: obtain the votes of the French Lebanese citizens.
The first round of elections will take place in April, on the 23rd.
In a declaration given after canceling the meeting, Le Pen said she has respect for them, bu she will not cover herself up.
A spokesperson from the Edict House said that she was handed a scarf before heading in, but she refused it. As he urged her to do so, she turned her back and left. The Edict House thinks her behavior was highly inappropriate.
A French law prohibits officials from wearing scarves.
Le Pen wants to prohibit the full-face veil from being worn in public places.
Although the Lebanon state was offended, others admired her gesture. For example, the vice president of her party, who said she expressed emancipation and freedom of the women.
Regarding her first meeting from Monday, Marine thought it was a good one and regarded the good relations between the two states.
