A Spanish prosecutor has formally filed a complaint against Cristiano Ronaldo, accusing the Real Madrid star and his agent of tax evasion, after generating the state an estimated loss of 14.7 million euros between 2011 and 2014.

The official communiqué suggests that Ronaldo “consciously” and “voluntarily” had used an “economic structure” founded in 2010 to hide the sale of some image rights.

The process is based on a report drawn up by the Spanish Tax Authority that reached to the prosecutors.

The case is similar to the one involving Argentinean star Lionel Messi and his father who have been sentenced to 21 months in prison, suspended.

According to several Spanish publications, Ronaldo risks a five-year prison sentence, given that Messi’s evasion was ‘considerably lower’ (4.1 million compared to 14.7 million in the case of Ronaldo).
