Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, was recognized as a co-author of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, the most popular single launched by the British musician, writes nme.com.
Since the official release of the track in 1971, only John Lennon has been granted with the copyright, although Yoko Ono and Phil Spector had a major contribution as well.
“Imagine” received on Wednesday, in New York, the Centennial Song Award granted each year by the National Music Publishers Association.
Taking advantage of the occasion, David Israelite, the CEO of the organization, announced that Ono would finally receive the copyright for the song, in accordance with the wish of her late husband.
At the event, the attendees had the occasion of hearing an audio interview conducted in 1980 where John Lennon says Yoko Ono deserves to be recognized as a co-author for the “influence and inspiration” of the song.
“If things were different in 1971, today I am happy to say that things have changed. So tonight I have the honor of correcting the register after 46 years and recognize Yoko Ono as co-author of the song’, stated Israelite.
Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono, and John Lennon’s only son marked the moment by publishing a photo on his Instagram account, captioning: “the proudest day of my life. Patience is a virtue!’
At the event on Wednesday, Patti and Jesse Smith performed, of course, “Imagine”.
Earlier this year, it was announced that John Lennon and Yoko’s story (Oct. 9, 1940 – December 8, 1980) will be featured in a film whose script will be signed by Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten for “Theory of the Whole / The Theory of Everything.
The movie will be produced by Yoko Ono, Michael De Luca (” The Social Network “,” Moneyball “,” Captain Phillips “) and Josh Bratman.
