Although the law on the new sanctions against Russia established by the Congress and the House of Representatives was placed on his table, President Donald Trump’s veto could not be effective, given the particularities of the vote from a few days ago.
Over the past few days, the House of Representatives and the Congress have adopted a series of sanctions against Russia with an overwhelming majority vote.
This situation was also achieved thanks to the contribution of the democratic minority, who voted alongside the Republicans. Once voted, the law was passed to the White House, and President Donald Trump would make a final decision.
New sanctions sparked Moscow’s fury (obviously)
In response, the Kremlin leader announced he would expel 755 US diplomats, damaging the diplomatic relation between the two states even more.
However, the most important aspect is that President Trump does not have the right or power not to contradict the decision voted by the Congress and the House of Representatives.
In theory, Donald Trump can promulgate or reject the law, but a veto might get him in trouble: if he uses the veto, both Republicans and Democrats will still have the majority assured to pass the law.
In the House of Representatives, only three senators voted against the law while 419 voted for.
The White House leader hoped to ameliorate the Washington-Moscow relationship, but his administration faces investigations regarding Russia’s interference in last year’s US presidential elections.
