Angela Merkel won the debate against her all time rival Martin Schulz during the most epic one-on-one televised confrontation

The German Chancellor has strengthened the status as a favorite for a new term, in the context that her rival needed a clear victory in order to obtain a real chance, according to polls.

The Germans expected a heated and intense debate, but they were disappointed.

Instead, those who hoped that Angela Merkel’s rival, Martin Schulz, who had a poor chance of defeating the legendary politician on 24^th September 24th vote to win, were left with nothing.

The candidate of the German Social Democrats needed a clear victory against the Christian-Democrat Merkel in order to cover the big differences showed by the last polls.

According to Spiegel, this was, by far, Merkel’s best performance “which does not say much, given that she has lost the first three,” notes BBC News.

However, it was difficult for Martin Schulz to launch an “attack” upon the Christian-Democrat.

For example, the Social Democrat candidate could not attack Angela Merkel’s controversial decision regarding the refugee policy.

During the debate, Martin Schulz focused his attention on social justice, unemployment, poverty, without scoring any success.
