The first text message turns 25, today!

Most of us have become addicted to smartphones and other mobile devices, but how many of you know the first text message is not even that “old”?

In 2017, chat and VoIP apps dictate everything. It is most likely that no text message has been written for some time since most text conversations are handled by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Viber and more.

All of this, however, was derived from short text messages in plain text.

Text messages were so important that they defined the limitations of important social networks, such as Twitter.

The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992, by engineer Neil Papworth.

The recipient of the SMS was the Vodafone director at that time, Richard Jarvis. The content of the message was a classic Happy Christmas in English.

It is important to note that, for the purpose of sending the first message, he used a computer, to the detriment of a mobile phone. The details matter less now. Importantly, that historical moment has significantly influenced many of our current habits.

Since the first SMS, things have changed dramatically

Although early adoption of short messages on mobile was slow, there are now many Internet users who prefer not to speak at all, but just to type texts.

As a reference for the evolution of the standard, in 2006, only in the US, 12.5 billion messages were sent in one month.

That figure has grown to 45 billion in one month in 2007. In June 2017, no less than 781 billion messages have been shipped to mobile in various formats.
