Adele Confirms She Said “No” To The Nfl Halftime Show

Superstar singer Adele made headlines when she confirmed being asked to perform for the Super Bowl LI halftime show, but declined. During a recent show the songstress confirmed to her audience that the football event was not her thing because it is not really about music. She also cited that she can’t dance. Her take on the situation was that it just wasn’t “her”, and she prefers an intimate and quiet audience to share her vocal skills with.

Performing at the half-time show is a much-coveted spot for big name performers due to the tremendous exposure it can offer. Performers like Rihanna, Coldplay, Beyonce and Katy Perry all saw the publicity potential and jumped at the chance to perform. Due to the number of people watching, it is the perfect setting to share new music and old standards with a completely new audience.

There is a change in the set-up that may be influencing artists as they are asked to perform. Although in former years performing during the NFL’s halftime show was done for free, it seems that NFL officials now realize the leverage they have due to offering stars exposure. They now request that performers contribute a portion of their tour income received after the Super Bowl show to the NFL or to make a financial commitment to the team. Although musicians took to the suggestion poorly, they realized how much exposure the small stint can really produce.

Although Adele made no mention of a funding request by the NFL, there is some speculation that it played a part in her decision to decline. It is possible that future artists may be more included to say no due to the financial commitment the NFL is requiring from performers.
