The autopilot 2.0 is expected to feature a retrofit for Tesla’s new triple front-facing camera system. According to a recent report from TheCountryCaller, Tesla Motors Inc. is planning to release the Autopilot 2.0 hardware suite which will be enhanced with a triple front-facing camera with more radar units.

Although this feature is not going to be available for every owner, Electrek believes that a retrofit is actually possible in the near future. Ever since the report was made, customers have eagerly been anticipating to have the new sensors suite which is expected to be installed on Tesla’s existing Model S and Model X.

But a retrofit may likely be offered to those whose vehicles entered production lines last week, i.e. customers of the premium-sedan, as well as owners of the premium SUV as noted by the publication. Already, those vehicles have been equipped with housing and wiring harnesses on the rearview mirror cutout for the triple-camera system. The wiring harness for multiple cameras is located just beside one of the rearview cutouts. This was revealed in a video uploaded by a Model X owner.

This implies that much labor would not be required for a retrofit as both the housing and the wiring needed for the new camera setup have already been made available on the system. However, there are still certain hardware components on the system that require updates for the second-generation hardware suite.

Data required to powertrain control need to be transmitted from an autonomous driving system located in the existing hardware suite which also depends on the Media Control Unit (MCU) in a way. No doubt, a dedicated computing channel is required for the new system which should actually be considered by the company in its bid to improve its Autopilot’s capabilities.
