Obama Administration Held Payout of $400 Million Cash To Iran Until Prisoners Released

On Thursday, the Obama administration admitted to having paid $400 million cash to Iran in January as leverage for the release of American prisoners held in the country but denies that the payment was a ransom.

According to the State Department spokesman, negotiations to free the four prisoners were conducted separately from the negotiations to return the money which was drawn from an unsuccessful military equipment deal that was made between the U.S. and Iran in 1979.

Christian pastor Saeed Abedini, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari, and Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian were the four detainees released on January 17. However, their case had been unpublicized until after their release was made.

But Kirby disclosed that the cash delivery was withheld by the U.S until Iran had made good on its promise to ensure the release of the prisoners. This recent development has added fuel to the ongoing controversy that got Republicans criticizing Obama administration for paying a ransom.

In a statement released on Thursday, the RNC Spokesman Michael Short disclosed that the admittance of the State Department was in outright contradiction to what they have been saying two weeks ago which can be said to be the dictionary definition of a ransom payment and further advised the Obama White House to admit paying a ransom to the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world and drop the charade.

“The president owes the American people an explanation,” disclosed Sen. Ben Sasse. According to him, “the truth matters and it is nothing but a ransom for a hostage release if a cash payment is a contingent on it.” However, every connection between the payment and the prisoners has been flatly denied by the administration.
